Similar species: Ruby Darter (comparison: male)

Identification features (male): 

1. Head, synthorax, abdomen red

2. Apparent vertical black stripe in dorsum of abdomen in some individuals

3. Legs red

4. Red spot on wingbase

1. Head, synthorax, legs, abdomen pale yellow

2. Yellow spot on wingbase 

3. Apparent vertical black stripe in dorsum of abdomen
