Blue-spotted Emperor

Scientific name: Anax nigrofasciatus nigrofasciatus

Habitat: marsh, pond, slow-flowing stream

Body length: 75-80 mm

Distribution in Hong Kong: Mainly in central and north New Territories, e.g. Shing Mun Country Park, Sha Lo Tung

Flight period in Hong Kong: April to December

Similar species: Pale-spotted Emperor, Lesser Emperor (Comparison)

Identification features:

1. “工”-shaped black spot on the frons 

2. Synthorax green, two sides with apparent black stripes

3. Inner edge of hindwing of both sexes smooth

4. Spots on abdomen dot-like

5. Second abdominal segment mainly blue in male, and either green or blue in female
